THIEVES

I love watching movies, a lot, especially the ones that make my heart race, anything from horrors, thrillers, action, investigative. I was watching this movie called “body of lies” and it begins with a scene of armed military men surrounding a building, getting ready to ambush their target. So these armed military men enter into a certain house and the inmates are so calm, there is a boy cooking while watching the television, another is on the table pretending to be fixing some electronic machine and others are just reading news papers and minding their own business. All of a sudden a bomb goes off unexpected and everybody in the building is no more.

What I can tell you is that the people in that room were prepared to die, it was a case of suicide bombing. But everybody else in that building did not expect to die. These movies make everything seem so easy, and this motivates the viewers to copy what they see in movies. By the time the script for a movie is written, it has been inspired by a true story, so everything we watch to some percentage is true. And this is where thieves borrow ideas on how to attack their prey.

Theft is also considered as a profession because people get paid even though it is not legally acknowledged by the state. Just as easy as it is seems in the movies to steal, these thieves in reality have an illusion that it is as easy as it seems. So amidst all the other motivations like hunger, anger, frustration, envy and suffering, movies are the biggest motivation for thieves. Some thieves take an extra mile in stealing especially if they are educated. They play with the psychology of their potential targets just to get exactly they want. As easy as that.

A thief may be good looking, elegant, well educated, from a well established family but no matter he or she looks like, he or she is still a thief. Some people are just habitual thieves so there is nothing much anyone can do about it. There was a very beautiful girl at school, so pretty but the worst thing is that she was a thief, I do not know if she still is and it just shocks me to think of her as a thief. I did not want to believe it until she stole from me, that is when it hit me, that is when I believed.

Everybody is a potential thief, the amazing thing is that the thieves in my school were these girls who used to claim that they were from well to do families. They used to try to paint this picture of a posh lifestyle yet in reality they had normal families. They used to spend money like there is no tomorrow and the next thing you know they are in that state that us Ugandans call “kawu” (broke).  So they start borrowing money and the next thing you know they have to steal just to pay back the money that they borrowed. It just does not make sense but the inspiration from movies makes sense.

Christmas is tomorrow and everyone wants to enjoy and take something home to their families, even the thieves. So as you shop, party and do whatever it is that you are going to do, ensure that you and your property are safe. The same way you bought everything that you have, someone out there is waiting to acquire whatever they can from you. Take care and Merry Christmas.
